Samsung Electronics has been selected as the supplier of PDP TVs for subway stations and LCD Monitors for subway cars as part of the subway IT project initiated by the City of Shanghai in China.

Samsung Electronics revealed that it will supply 100 units of 42" PDP TVs to be installed in 16 subway stations of the Subway Line 1 which cuts through the heart of Shanghai and 900 units of 15" LCD

Monitors to be installed inside 29 trains \(Each train consists of 6 cars.\).

This supplier designation was obtained outright by Samsung Electronics only \(sole supplier\) after a competition among world-leading corporations, a testament to the technological and brand prowess of the company in the next-generation displays.

Especially because Samsung Electronics will be able to participate from a more advantageous point in bids for the Shanghai Subway IT Project that has construction plans for up to Subway Line 9 until 2010, other than the current 3 lines \(Subway Lines 1 and 2 and above-ground light railway\), obtaining additional orders in the future does not seem too far-fetched.

Executive Director Park, Jong Won of Visual Display Division of Samsung Electronics said, "By installing cutting-edge displays in the Shanghai Subway Line 1 with an average daily commuter population of 750,000, the advertising effect for the company can be maximized," and added, "We plan to penetrate the Chinese market on a sustained basis based on cutting-edge digital products such as PDPs and LCDs."

Samsung Electronics delivered the products on Sept. 18 as the first round and is implementing a project with an aim to open some of the sections by October 1, a national holiday.

The company is currently manufacturing TVs and monitors in Tianjin and Samsung monitors have already assumed the No. 1 market share. In addition, the company also initiated local production of PDP TVs this year and opened the Shanghai Digital TV Research Center this month, as part of an effort for full-fledged assault on the next-generation display market in China.
