HLM617W DLP Rear-Projection
TV |
|
Many of the problems
of conventional three-gun
projection TVs are
avoided with DLP.
At recent shows, I
have often been blown
away by the picture
quality of front projectors
using this second-generation
DLP chip, so you can
bet I could hardly
wait to fire this
unit up.
Back in Issue 44,
I reviewed a highly
impressive 30"
Samsung direct-view
HDTV. In that review,
I touched upon Samsung,
the company, and its
plans to be at the
cutting edge of HDTV
technology. I said
that I expected to
see some stunning
RPTVs from Samsung
reviewed here soon.
This is the RPTV we've
been waiting for.
The HLM617W is a 61"
rear-projection HDTV,
one of the first DLP
rear-projection TVs
powered by Texas Instruments'
current generation
1280×720 HD2 DLP(Digital
light processor) chip.
DLP is the one of
several digital technologies
vying to become the
digital future of
RPTVs for home use-and
is presently in the
lead.
DLP as a rear-projector
"engine"
may well replace CRTs
in the future, and
Samsung id clearly
breaking new ground
with these sets. While
this one didn't impress
me as delivered, I
was satisfied that
it has incredible
potential, particularly
when accurately calibrated
and used with a DVI
source. There are
네 many advantages
to this design versus
CRT-based RPTVs that
many people will choose
it in spite of its
shortcomings. As for
me, I still prefer
overall the stunning
blacks and the smoother,
mere natural pictures
of this set with bright,
colorful pictures
via DVI. You can bet
I'll be watching these
DLPs closely as time
goes by. It's getting
very close to the
time for even hardcore
videophiles to start
(willingly) saying
goodbye to the CRT
for rear-projection
